The new blog for the Under 17s WA team

Dear parents and friends

Most of you would have read my blog for the Under 15s WA state team.

Welcome to the new blog for the Under 17s WA state team.

The team has yet to be selected. However all nominees, I am sure, have been training hard preparing for the selection utilising M and F Funding. Some of the nominees have been training in Beijing and Malaysia. For those who do not know, M and F Funding stands for Mum and Father Funding. That's right, because of the love for our children, we are willing to let them have their badminton training at our own cost as we want the best for them.

We are of course lucky that we have volunteers like YuLi Zheng as our coach. Kay Terry has also volunteered to be the team manager.

Some info on YuLi:

Zheng Yuli (Chinese: 郑昱鲤) is a retired female badminton player from China.

 Career

She earned a bronze medal as a semifinalist at both the 1985 IBF World Championships and 1987 IBF World Championships in women's singles, dropping three set matches in each case to her compatriots Han Aiping and Li Lingwei respectively. She won the women's singles at the Japan Open in 1984 and at the Denmark Open in 1984 and 1986. Zheng played on the  Uber Cup (women's international) championship teams for China in 1986 and 1988.

We are so lucky in WA that we have all these world class badminton players like YuLi , AiLing Zhang, Paul Kong and Nick Kidd teaching our children. I am sure other coaches like Himanshu Thacker and Kim Rogers will be involved again in helping the team reach their best.

We are also lucky to have Kay Terry volunteer to be a manager or manageress to be politically correct. Kay is an accredited BAWA coach and will definitely bring great value to the team.

Infact if you dig a bit deeper, you will find that she has quite a record in badminton which unfortunately is not readily accessible on the internet as the achievements are all pre the computer age.

For the record, she has represented Australia in 3 Commonwealth Games and 2 Uber Cups. She won numerous gold medals in the World Masters Games.  She has been an Australia's Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles Champion for over 6 years from 1964. Her crowning glory must be that she was awarded the Member of the British Empire Medal for her contribution to sports.

Annie, my wife is again the Team Umpire. I am sure she will do us proud.

What holds for my 2 boys Jazton and Tyzton? They have both been training hard during the school holidays. Will they both make the team?

It is up to them to shine and be selected.

The other nominees as far as I know include:

Amos Yi
Edmund Xu
Titus Tan
Dennis Zhao
Edward fan
Kevin Huynh
Mohamed

As far as the girls are concerned I know they are:

Phing Teo
Alexandra Phan
Silvi Botha
2 other new girls.

Good luck to all of them as this next competition will be tough but interesting. They will learn lots and I am sure they will achieve lots.

There are no photos yet to display, but they are coming.
