Dear readers
Again, no updates from the parents or photos. I have had to rely on Tournament Software to find out what is happening.
The Scorpions faced NSW 2 and went down 12/4. Theirs has been a tough run.
In the afternoon, the Scorpions had their first win by 1 game after drawing 8/8 matches. That was close and was their first win.
The Scorpions will face Geraldton tomorrow. If they win Geraldton, the Scorpions will be placed 9th in a field of 11 teams. Not bad for such a young team. I am sure the team members have learned so much from this event. Some of the members are first time state players and I have seen how much they have improved since taking part in this tournament. I am sure we will see new state players like Jackie, Damien, Bernice, Marcus, Rupert and Theodore again in other state teams.
The WASPs had another easy run against Mainland NZ.
The tournament is missing Northern NZ which is usually a very strong team.
In the afternoon the WASPs beat Vic 1. That is a great achievement as Vic 1 has always been a stumbling block for WA. The 10/6 victory score will not show the anxiety the players and parents went through today. I guess Coach Yuli would have been pretty nervous too.
The win means that WASPs have a chance to fight NSW 1 again for gold and silver.
This is a great result for WA. In recent years, the previous best win in the Under 17s was a 2014 bronze in NZ against a pool of 15 teams. Bella and Geri May are the only players from that 2014 team still young enough to play in this tournament.
Bella and Kai Chen are leading the field in their singles and should be ranked 1st in singles. Good luck to them.
The other team mates that formed the 2014 bronze team include Xiang, Jasper and Tyzton. The 3 boys are umpiring in this tournament and also barracking and encouraging this years team.
Of course, the 2014 team had coach Yuli and Manager Kay Terry looking after them. I am sure they both are relishing this moment and throwing everything they have into giving the players their best chance for a historic gold or silver.
The last time WA fought NSW 1 for a gold was in the Under 15s tournament in 2012. At that tournament, WA could only snatch a historical silver.
Hopefully WA can win gold tomorrow. Best of luck to them.
Go WA.
