Semi finals WA v NNZ

Dear readers

I woke up in the morning and started reading on the scores.

This was never going to be an easy day for the WA team as they were going to play against probably the no. 1 team in the team event.

Yu Li and Kay would have given them a rousing pep talk.

The first match was between Julia and Silvi against C Zhang and E Hawkins. There was a close first set that reached 24/22 in NNZ favour. The girls dug deep but only managed 12/21 in the 2nd set giving NNZ the first point.

Next, Edward and Amos played against B Hillier and Alex Qu.  NNZ got the first set at 21/11. WA fought back bravely and managed to win after deuce points reaching 23/21.  The 3rd set was won by NNZ giving them a 2 nil lead.

Phing and Alex played R Devasthan and D Yin next. They got the first set at 21/19. They lost the 2nd set at 21/13 but were able to stay focused to give WA a first point winning at 21/17.

Tyz and Titus were next against P Ding and K Tasker. WA was too strong getting 21/15 and 21/19. The teams are now drawn at 2 all.

This is going to be a close fight.

Julia then played against S Wu in the WS4. She could not win the first set after deuce at 22/20. The 2nd set was lost at 21/7. We were down 1 match again.

The next one on was Edward. Edward lost the first set at 21/18. He managed a courageous fight back on the 2nd to get 21/17. The 3rd and final set was a real test of stamina and willpower and Edward triumphed after a mammoth fight to 30/29. The team must have been screaming their encouragement.

This was now 3 all. Silvi went next against C Zhang and went down at 21/17 and 21/9.

It was the captain next to bring the team up. Titus lost the first at 21/14. He gave everything he had to get the 2nd at 22/20. Titus ran out of puff losing the 3rd set at 21/13. This was again a close fight and showed how competitive the teams are. They are giving everything for WA.

Alex went next against R Devathasan. She could not contain Deva going down 21/14 and 21/15.

WA is now trailing 3/6.

Tyz went next to try and salvage the score. He only managed 8/21 in the first set against B Hillier. Tyz then got back fighting and got up to 27/25 but could not get the 2nd set.

WA is now down 7/3 and things are looking desperate. Phing gets on next and wins easily at 21/12 and 21/14 salvaging the team's chances. WA is now at 4/7 and a win by Amos could mean the final score will be won based on the mixed doubles.

Amos loses the first set to P Ding at 21/15. He gets back the 2nd set at 21/19 but goes down at the 3rd at 21/15. He must be tired after all these 3 setters. Amos has done well despite nursing an injury. He has shown the heart of a true West Australian.

WA now trails at 8/4 but there is still a chance if we win all the mixed doubles.

KJ and Julia got on next against M Yep and E Hawkins.  They got the first set at 22/20. However despite giving their best they went down 21/16 and 21/15.  NNZ now has an unassailable lead.

The next few games will just be for the WA pride.

Edward and Silvi also went down fighting at 21/9 and 24/22. Another close fight that went down to the nerve wrecking deuce points.

Titus and Phing get on next against B Hillier and D Yin. They win the first set at 21/16. The 2nd set went down to 19/21 giving NNZ a 3rd set which WA wins finally at 21/18.

Tyz and Alex go next against P Ding and S Wu. WA get the first set at 21/17 but lose the 2nd set at 18/21. WA steps up the pressure and finished the 3rd set at a comfortable 21/14.

The final score is 10/6 to NNZ.

It was so close. If there was 2 more matches won by WA, we would have been in a better position.

I just spoke to Annie and Yuli. They were commenting that the atmosphere at the court was most tense with both teams cheering each other on. The coaches have also been squabbling with each other and the managers.

I must have missed a really interesting match.

I am just checking what is happening with the other semi final matches. It looks like WA will play Vic 1 for the bronze medal. Vic 1 is trailing NSW 1 6/9 and finally lost at 6/10.

There will be another epic encounter between Vic 1 and WA.
