The Bronze medal fightoff

Dear readers

Just came back from lunch and quickly caught up on the scores to date.

WA is not traveling well. Silvi and Julia only managed 16/21 and 14/21 against J Au and T Chan.

Amos and Edward lost their first set against B Haggerty and J Taing.  They fought back to get the 2nd set at 21/14. They went down fighting at 15/21. I think both boys must be tired out from their NNZ fights.

Phing and Alex also could not contain J Lai and A Phan losing 21/7 and 21/13.

WA is now trailing 3 love.

Titus and Tyz next played against E Luk and A Zopf. They also could not contain the Vic 1 onslaught going down at 21/11 and 21/19.

Julia was unlucky to lose the first set at 22/20 and the 2nd set at 21/15.

Edward, tired out from his long battle against NNZ also went down at 21/13 and 21/14 against Eric Qi. We could not ask more from him.

Silvi also went down at 21/4 and 21/9 against A Lorincz. We are now trailing 7 love and things look bleak.

Titus went on next against Eric Qi. Titus got the first set at 21/13. He lost the 2nd and 3rd at 19/21 and 14/21.

Alex also went down at 15/21 and 19/21 against A Phan.

Tyzton was also unable to contain K Patil giving Vic 1 another set at 19/21 and 16/21.

Phing went next against J Lai. Joy won the first set at 21/18 but lost the 2nd set at 21/14 before retiring giving WA it's first point.

Amos then steps up to try and salvage another point for WA. He loses the first at 21/9 but fights to get the 2nd set at 21/18. Amos ran out of steam giving Vic 1 another point at 21/12.

Tyz and Alex get another point for WA after J Lai concedes a walkover as a result of injury.

Edward and Julia go for another 3 setter but cannot succeed against a stronger Vic 1 pair losing at 21/10, 15/21 and 21/11.

Likewise Amos and Silvi have to concede another point against B Haggerty and J Au at 24/22 and 21/16.

Titus and Phing carry the flag for WA in the final game which was won against A Zopf and A Phan winning at 21/10, 19/21 and 15/21.

This gives a final score of 13/3 to Vic 1.

These players never gave up even though they have lost the medal. It was heart breaking to see the result as I am sure the players have given their best for WA.

They should all stand proud as they have gone further as an Under 17s team than any that have preceded them.

I am sure they are deflated. However, this experience will stand them in good stead for their education and their life. Lots will have been learnt about courage and grace.

The players now have to take stock of what they have achieved and learnt so that they can concentrate on their individual events.
