Dear friends
The WA team has gone through a heartbreaking day. The first match was against Victoria Rebels. Vic only sent 1 team this year so all the best Vic players were in the Vic team. We had to win Vic to get a medal playoff. The team gave everything they had, blisters and all. However, it was not meant to be. The final score was 7-9 to Vic. It went down to the wire and was so close. The scores will not show the excitement and heartbreak felt by the team.
I am sure there were some tears from the team. That's what the nationals are about. The fight, the happiness, the sadness when we do not make it. The players will all have given their best and should be supported and also congratulated for representing WA and giving all their sweat and tears and sometimes blood.
I have been there so many times and know what Teck Hin and the team had felt in the last few days.
So much anticipation, so much hope and gutsy display of what it is to represent your state.
WA has often had to be happy with 4th or 5th place.
WA made history in 2014 when we went to NZ, the lion's den and brought back our first bronze after years in the wilderness. That was against 15 teams.
In 2015, WA again came 4th in a tournament against 9 teams.
In 2016, on homeground advantage, we managed a historic silver in a field of 11 teams. There was so much joy in WA.
So, it is never easy. You only know that the players always give their best fighting for their state. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. It is the fight that counts.
In the afternoon, WA beat Queensland without any problems.
That means WA now fights for 5th and 6th place on Tuesday.
We wish the players all the luck they need. There is still the individuals to look forward to. Night.
